Ladies’ report by Katy Anderson:
In cold, wet and muddy conditions, Bromsgrove & Redditch AC ladies won the Worcestershire County XC Championships team title for the third successive year with another strong series of performances at Cofton Park.
The event was combined with the Warwickshire Championships, which resulted in higher quality fields across every age group.
The course was hilly, and totally different from the course used for the Inter County XC Championships at the same venue. It was also the official trial for the Inter County Champs, with the first six Worcestershire athletes across the line selected automatically for the showpiece event in March.
After a steady first lap, Katy Anderson made her way through the field, picking off several runners over the last mile to finish first B&R runner, third in the Worcestershire Champs and ninth overall in the combined race in 24:17.
Also securing automatic selection for the Inter Counties, Tamara Ball finished sixth (25:42), holding off Laura Kyte, a temporary new recruit to the B&R ladies’ team, who finished seventh in 25:50 (in the Worcestershire race), completing the title-winning trio.
Kyte – a former member of B&R – now lives in Argentina with her husband where they both work as athletics coaches. She was a welcome addition to the ladies’ team, and with the expected return of Sally Hogan for the Midland Championships at the end of January, the team should be even stronger.
Thomasina Ball, Mel Hepke and Becky Selvey finished in 15th (27:50), 17th (28:24) and 19th (29:34) respectively, with Dagmar Prinzing finishing just outside the Worcestershire top 30 in 31st (34:04).
Girls’ age-group highlights included a team silver for the B&R under-15 girls led by Ellen Bowen who won individual bronze; and under-13 team bronze led by individual silver medalist Anna Nicod.
The next race for B&R’s senior women is the third Midland League XC fixture at Droitwich next Saturday 10 January.
Men’s report (a team effort):
WELL DONE to all who turned up yesterday, Fantastic result for B&R – County Champions!!! 😀 Fantastic team effort chaps, well done to everyone! Let’s get that Birmingham League promotion and make it an even better start to the year. WELL DONE!!
Maximum respect goes out to all the junior athletes – the younger age groups ran earlier in the day when the weather was at its worst. Heroic effort.
